Those who light in Hollywood know how unforgiving to face appearance the sun can be. Not only its harsh and hard quality but also prevailingly steep direction throughout most part of day. Actors are forced to squint their eyes and top illumination gives them infamous "racoon" look because of eyesockets being in shadow. Of course this predicament effects not only lighting ratio (face) but also contrast ratio between Subject and Environment. Means of dealing with situation are plenty and they relate to changing quality of  light and creating localized Lighting Ratio as well as overall Contrast Ratio. Some knowledgeable cinematographers would also create Lighting Styles transforming quality and direction of existing sunlight.
Main tools for the job are Nets, Silks, Bounce Boards and Reflectors . They come in different color, sizes and materials.

The Sun-Swatter is a very useful accessory. It allows for long tracking shot on Telephoto Lens in situations where rough quality of sunlight would not allow such a choice of shot.
